Hurt by Oppn remarks in RS, Dhankhar leaves Chair briefly

New Delhi, Aug 8 (UNI) A pained Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday refused to conduct the proceedings, alleging disrespect from the Opposition members and objecting to a news article accusing him of prejudice.

“The conduct of the members today leaves me in pain. I find myself unable to continue proceedings in the Chair for some time,” he said, rising from the chair saying “with a heavy heart”.

Dhankhar’s decision to leave the chair followed an uproar in the House by the Opposition demanding a discussion on the disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat from Paris Olympics.

When the permission was denied by the Chair, the Opposition walked out.

Amid the din, the Chairperson also expressed displeasure over Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien’s conduct.
