Inaugural Kho Kho World Cup kicks off in Delhi

New Delhi, Jan 13 (UNI) The first-ever Kho Kho World Cup was inaugurated with much fanfare at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in the national capital on Monday.

The event, marking a historic moment for the indigenous sport, brought together players from 23 countries and witnessed an electrifying opening ceremony.

The opening ceremony was graced by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, and Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse.

Other prominent attendees included Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha, Delhi LG Vinai Kumar Saxena, J&K LG Manoj Sinha, Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Shukla, and KKFI and IKKF President Sudhanshu Mittal.

The ceremony showcased India’s rich cultural heritage with vibrant dance performances and a sand art projection paying homage to Mother Earth.

A ceremonial parade of the Indian flag and a parade of participating nations highlighted the spirit of global camaraderie. The unveiling of the World Cup trophies for both the men’s and women’s tournaments added to the excitement.

In his address, KKFI President Sudhanshu Mittal celebrated Kho Kho’s international recognition, while IOA President PT Usha underscored the sport’s cultural importance and values of fair play.

Mandaviya expressed aspirations for Kho Kho’s inclusion in the Asian Games and Olympics, reflecting on the sport’s growing global appeal. Vice President Dhankhar lauded the agility and strategy integral to Kho Kho, calling the event a “golden moment in sports history.”

The World Cup, set to run until January 19, will feature men’s and women’s tournaments with players from 23 countries competing.

The event officially commenced with a torch lighting ceremony led by Vice President Dhankhar and Minister Khadse.

The inaugural Kho Kho World Cup marks a monumental step for the sport, blending tradition with a global vision.
