New Delhi, Dec 12 (UNI) The second India-Iran-Armenia Trilateral Consultations were held today in New Delhi during which the three sides emphasised on connectivity initiatives and the need for fostering close cooperation under the International North-South Transport Corridor and highlighted the role of Chabahar Port in this regard.
J.P Singh, Joint Secretary, PAI Division led the discussions from the Indian side. The delegations from Iran and Armenia were led by Hashem Ashja’ Zadeh, Director General of South Asia Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Anahit Karapetyan, Head of Asia-Pacific Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, respectively.
Building on the outcomes of the previous trilateral consultations held in Yerevan in April 2023, the three sides discussed connectivity initiatives, engagement in multilateral fora, and regional developments. They also explored ways to promote trade, tourism and cultural exchanges while strengthening people-to-people ties, a statement said.
During the consultations, the delegations emphasised the need for fostering close cooperation under the INSTC and highlighted the role of Chabahar Port in this regard. The Armenian side briefed the participants on its connectivity initiative “The Crossroads of Peace”.
The three sides reiterated their commitment to continued cooperation under the format. It was agreed that the next round of trilateral consultations will be held in Iran at a mutually convenient date and time, the statement added.
The Armenian initiative Crossroads of Peace envisions opening new transportation routes across Armenia with the hopes of transforming the country into a regional transit hub. The project calls for the opening of connections between Azerbaijan and Türkiye via Armenian territory and aims to incorporate these links into east-west trade.
