Dambulla, July 26 (UNI) In a crucial semifinal match of the Asia Cup, the Indian Women’s cricket team showcased an all-round performance to secure a place in the final on Friday.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Bangladesh Women struggled right from the start due to the disciplined bowling attack by the Indian team.
Renuka Singh Thakur emerged as the star with the ball, delivering a lethal spell of 3/10 in her four overs. Her early breakthroughs were pivotal in putting Bangladesh on the back foot. Radha Yadav complemented Renuka’s efforts, taking 3/14 and maintaining the pressure throughout.
India bowlers were relentless, and their combined efforts restricted Bangladesh to a modest total of 80/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Despite a valiant effort by the Bangladeshi captain, Nigar Sultana, who top-scored with 32 runs, the lack of support from the other end made it difficult for Bangladesh to post a competitive score.
Chasing a target of 81, the Indian opening duo of Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana ensured there were no hiccups. Smriti was in sublime form, scoring an unbeaten 55 off 39 balls, which included nine boundaries and a six. Shafali played the perfect supporting role, contributing 26 off 28 balls. The pair’s solid partnership saw India achieve the target comfortably in just 11 overs, without losing any wickets.
With this victory, India Women have secured their ninth consecutive appearance in the Asia Cup final, underlining their dominance in the tournament. Their performance in this match was a testament to their balanced team composition, with both the bowlers and batswomen stepping up when needed.
