Ranchi, Jan 31 (UNI) Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Wednesday tendered his resignation, amidst speculations about possible legal action against him, sources said.
Soren, who was grilled by the Enforcement Directorate for hours during the day in connection with a money laundering case related to an alleged land scam, has handed his resignation to Governor C P Radhakrishnan.
Sources said the Governor has accepted Soren’s resignation.
Jharkhand Pradesh Congress president Rajesh Thakur said MLAs of the ruling JMM and allies have elected Champai Soren as the leader of their legislative party.
Champai Soren, who was Transport Minister in Hemant Soren’s cabinet, would now submit his claim to the governor to be sworn in as the new CM.
The news comes amid rising political tensions and speculations of legal troubles for Soren. Sources close to the matter indicate that the incumbent Transport Minister, Champai Soren, is set to succeed him as the next Chief Minister. Hemant Soren, a key figure in Jharkhand politics and the leader of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), has been at the center of political discussions in recent weeks.
