Johannesburg, Jan 12 (UNI) Joburg Super Kings triumphed by six runs via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method in a rain-impacted Betway SA20 match against MI Cape Town at the Wanderers on Sunday IST.
The weather played a major role in the proceedings, with intermittent thundershowers affecting play throughout the day.
The match saw multiple interruptions, with the most significant break coming after the dinner interval. This resulted in a reduction of the Joburg’s chase to 19 overs, and their target was revised from 141 to 136.
However, a further downpour disrupted play again, with Joburg on 82/3 after 11.3 overs, just ahead by six runs under the DLS method at that point. Persistent rainfall prevented the players from returning to the field, allowing Joburg to secure the victory and the four match points.
Leus du Plooy, unbeaten on 23, and Wihan Lubbe (1 not out) were Joburg’s batsmen at the crease when play was halted. Captain Faf du Plessis had contributed a solid 30 off 23 balls before being dismissed in dramatic fashion by Dewald Brevis. The young MI Cape Town fielder produced a stunning catch at the cover boundary, tipping the ball back infield before diving full length to complete the dismissal.
MI Cape Town’s bowling was led by Kagiso Rabada, who impressed with figures of 2/10 in his first match of Season 3 after missing the opener in Gqeberha.
Earlier, MI Cape Town’s innings had struggled, with the side reduced to 30/4. All-rounder George Linde anchored the recovery with a defiant 48 not out from 35 balls, including 5 fours and 2 sixes.
Linde found crucial support from Brevis, with the pair adding 43 runs off 26 balls for the fifth wicket. Despite further setbacks with the dismissals of Brevis (14) and Azmatullah Omarzai (1), Linde continued to fight back.
Delano Potgieter, fresh from his Player of the Match performance in the tournament opener, added another significant contribution with an explosive 44 not out from 22 balls (4 fours, 3 sixes). His unbroken 65-run partnership with Linde off just 39 balls helped MI Cape Town to a competitive total of 140/6.
