Kalinga University appeals to Nepali students to return following uproar over death of student

Bhubaneswar/New Delhi, Feb 17 (UNI) The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University in Bhubaneswar on Monday urged Nepali students who had left or were planning to leave to return for classes, following uproar over the death of a Nepali student in the KIIT hostel on Sunday evening.

The KIIT University in an appeal said it has taken all-out efforts to restore normalcy in the campus and hostels to resume the academic activities.

The appeal read:

“There was an unfortunate incident which took place late in the evening yesterday on the KIIT campus. Immediately after the incident, police investigated the matter and apprehended the culprit.

“The KIIT administration has taken all-out efforts to restore normalcy in the campus and hostels to resume the academic activities.

“An appeal is made to all our Nepali students who have or plan to leave the campus to return and resume the classes.”

Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech student from Butwal, reportedly took her own life on Sunday after enduring persistent harassment from an Indian student. Fellow Nepali students claimed that despite previous complaints, the university administration failed to take action against the perpetrator, Kathmandu Post reported.

A social media user also shared an audio clip related to the case.

Following Lamsal’s death, Nepali students staged a peaceful protest demanding justice.

However, instead of addressing their concerns, the Registrar’s Office issued a notice asking Nepali students to vacate the campus.

The Nepali Embassy in New Delhi reached out to the university administration over the safety of Nepali students. “As soon as we were informed of the incident, we contacted the university officials and urged them to ensure the safety of Nepali students,” said Surendra Thapa, deputy chief of mission at the embassy.

Over 800 Nepali students are reportedly enrolled at the KIIT.
