Kashmir higher reaches, some plains, receive fresh snowfall and rain

Srinagar, Feb 1 (UNI) The higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley as well as some plains experienced a fresh light to moderate snowfall on Saturday, officials said.

Most parts of Jammu and Kashmir also received rainfall overnight, the Meteorological Department Srinagar said.

The MeT office said tourist destinations of Pahalgam in south Kashmir received 11.2cm of snowfall, the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir 7.5cm, Qazigund 4 cm, Kupwara 1.5cm, Kokernag 2.0 cm overnight.

The picturesque Sonamarg in Ganderbal district received 1.5 feet of snowfall, while Zojila pass, on the strategic Srinagar-Ladakh highway, also received moderate snowfall. Gurez, Razdan top, Z Gali, and Sadhna pass received moderate to heavy snowfall.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, and other parts of the Kashmir Valley received intermittent rainfall overnight.

The MeT predicted the weather will generally remain cloudy with the possibility of light rain/Snow at scattered places till today forenoon. The weather will generally remain dry on February 2.

“There are chances of light snowfall and rain from the evening of February 3 over the isolated places, while on February 4 the weather will generally remain cloudy with the possibility of light to moderate Rain/snow at many places over Jammu and Kashmir.

Another spell of light rain/Snow at scattered places towards early morning/forenoon on February 5 is also expected.

Meanwhile, the night temperatures were recorded above normal at most of the weather stations following snowfall.

The minimum temperature in Srinagar was recorded during the intervening night of Friday and Saturday at 0.8°C and it was 1.4°C above normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

The ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district recorded a low of -7.4°C and it was 0.2°C above the average for the valley of meadows during this time. The tourist resort of Pahalgam had a low of -0.4°C and Kokernag -0.8°C, the MeT office said.
