Kerala: Wayanad landslide disaster is not ‘normal’ : PM Modi

Wayanad, Aug 10 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday asked the Kerala Government to submit a detailed memorandum about the loss due to the landslide disaster in Wayanad district of Kerala on July 30.

The landslide devastation is ‘not normal’, Modi said it affected thousands of families in Wayanad.

The PM said the memorandum to be submitted should include the amount for the rehabilitation of the survivors and victims of the landslides.

He assured all the possible financial assistance for rehabilitation of the victims and survivors and to revive the Wayanad.

Modi also said “all the families of the victims or Kerala is not alone, the whole nation is with the people of Wayanad to overcome the disaster situation”.

Modi was speaking after chairing a review meeting at the Conference hall in Collectorate in Kalpetta, following his visit to disaster areas. He spent around six hours in Wayanad to take stock of the situation and conduct an aerial survey. The PM also visited the relief camps and hospitals, where the survivors are undergoing treatment at Meppadi in Wayanad district.

He said ” after receiving the memorandum from the State government citing the damage of buildings, crops, other type of loss and rehabilitation to the survivors, the Central Government will take a decision.

Modi assured that the Central and State government will work together to revive the landslide hit areas and the rehabilitation work will not be hampered due to the lack of funds.

The Prime Minister said all the central agencies would help the disaster affected people.

Modi said “I have seen the situation on the spot and met the injured people at relief camps and hospitals.

After hearing of the landslide incident, he contacted Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and sent all the Central agencies for the rescue operations.

Meanwhile, Revenue Minister K Rajan told news persons that a draft memorandum has already been submitted to the Central Government and expect that the Centre will provide all financial assistance to Kerala in this regard.

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, Chief Minister Pinarayi VIjayan, Union Minister Suresh Gopi, Revenue Minister K Rajan, Forest Minister A K Saseedharan, Chief Secretary V Venu ,District Collector Meghasree. D. R and top officials also attended the review meeting.
