Kolkata doc murder: CBI to produce Ghosh, cop Mondal in court Sunday

Kolkata, Sep 15 (UNI) Arrested former RGK Medical College Principal Sandip Ghosh and police officer Abhijit Mondal will be produced before a city court on Sunday for purportedly misleading the probe, tampering with evidence and delay in filing of FIR in the alleged rape-murder of a junior medic last month.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Ghosh and the former Officer-on-Charge of Tala Police Station Abhijit Mondal on Saturday night after sustained interrogation in connection with the brutal rape and murder of the 31-year-old lady post-graduate intern medic at her workplace R G Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) on August 9.

The colonial-era RGKMCH, located close to Shyambazar in north Kolkata, comes under the jurisdiction of the Tala Police Station.

The CBI had on September 2 arrested Ghosh for his involvement in alleged corruption during his stint as the medical college’s principal since 2021.

The protesting government medics, whose sit-in demonstration near the West Bengal Health Department headquarters Swastha Bhaban entered the 6th day on Sunday, have hailed the CBI’s arrest of the duo and described the gruesome murder as an “institutional crime.”

The protesting medics have called a mega rally this afternoon to gherao the Swastha Bhaban

“Their arrest has boosted our protests for the past 37 days since the crime was committed on August 9,” said a protesting doctor.

The CBI took up the probe on August 14 after the Calcutta High Court transferred the case from Kolkata Police. The federal agency has alleged that the crime scene has been altered before they took up the case five days after the horrendous crime.

The CBI on Saturday night had taken the duo to the Eastern Railway’s BR Singh Hospital for medical tests. The central agency would produce the two before a city court later in the day and seek their custody.

The CBI was also questioning a Sub-Inspector of Tala Police Station regarding the case.

The brutal August 9 crime has sent shockwaves across the nation and triggered widespread protests even among Indians settled abroad with the battle cry “justice for R G Kar”.

Kolkata and other parts of Bengal have been singed by protests for over a month with citizens across all social and economic divides pouring out onto the streets seeking exemplary punishment for the accused and unraveling of the conspiracy angles in the case.

The number of arrests in the rape-murder case has now gone up to three.

Kolkata police civic volunteer Sanjay Roy had been arrested by the city police on August 10.

The Calcutta High Court later handed over the case to the CBI.
