To commemorate the 300th birth anniversary of Devi Ahilyabai, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav held a cabinet meeting in Maheshwar, a city associated with Devi Ahilyabai, on Friday. During this meeting, an important decision was made to implement a liquor ban in religious cities throughout the state.
CM Yadav announced that the cabinet has resolved to prohibit liquor sales in 17 religious cities in Madhya Pradesh. All existing liquor shops in these locations will be permanently closed, with no plans for relocation.
“In order to gradually move towards a liquor ban, we have decided that, in the first phase, liquor shops will be shut down in the Nagar Palika, Nagar Parishad, and Nagar Panchayat of these 17 cities. These shops will not be moved elsewhere and will be permanently closed,” he stated.
Liquor sale banned in Ujjain, Panna and other cities
The 17 cities were liquor sale will be banned include one municipal corporation and several Nagar Palika, Nagar Parishad, and Gram Panchayat areas. Specifically, liquor shops will be entirely closed within the Ujjain Municipal Corporation limits. Additionally, the ban will extend to Datia Nagar Palika, Panna Nagar Palika, Mandla Nagar Palika, Multai Nagar Palika, Mandsaur Nagar Palika, and Maihar Nagar Palika.
The Nagar Parishads where liquor shops will be shut down include Omkareshwar, Maheshwar, Mandleshwar, Orchha, Chitrakoot, and Amarkantak.
CM Yadav remarked, “It is important to recognize that these Nagar Parishads are significant centers of our religious faith, which is why we have decided to close the shops in these areas based on our liquor policy.”
Furthermore, the Gram Panchayats where liquor will be banned include Salkanpur, Barman Kala, Linga, Barman Khurd, Kundalpur, and Bandakpur.
The Chief Minister also reiterated that the existing policy to ban liquor within a five-kilometer radius on both sides of the Narmada River will remain in effect without any changes.
