Ujjain: The Mahakal Temple in Ujjain came alive with festive energy as Shiva Navratri celebrations began on Monday, ahead of Mahashivratri. On the first day, Lord Mahakal was adorned with turmeric, symbolizing his transformation into a groom. The occasion was marked by women singing Mangal songs and dancing in joy, adding a celebratory spirit to the atmosphere. This year, Shiva Navratri will span 10 days, making it a truly grand occasion.
The traditional rituals began with worship at Shri Kotitirth Mahadev, near Kotitirth Kund. Following this, 11 Brahmins, led by Pandit Ghanshyam Sharma, performed a special worship and abhishek of Lord Mahakal in the sanctum sanctorum, including the Ekadasha-Ekadashni Rudrabhishek with Panchamrit. Saffron mixed with sandalwood was applied to the deity, and turmeric was offered on the Jaladhari.
Women from the temple committee added to the festive fervor by arriving with dhols, dancing and singing Mangal songs, and worshipping Lord Mahakal in his groom form. This heartwarming tradition filled the temple with devotion and happiness.
Later in the afternoon, the Bhog Aarti of Lord Mahakal was performed, a daily ritual during Shiva Navratri. Due to the Lord’s changed routine, the Aarti was held in the afternoon, followed by the Sandhya Pujan, which was conducted earlier than usual at 3 pm.
On this auspicious day, Lord Mahakal was adorned in vibrant red, pink, and yellow attire, along with a silver crown, garland of heads, and an umbrella, creating a divine and magnificent sight. The celebrations will continue for 10 days, offering devotees a chance to experience the grandeur and holiness of Lord Mahakal.
