LS adjourned for day after uproar by Opposition

New Delhi, Mar 18 (UNI) The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on Tuesday amid Opposition uproar, alleging rule violations during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech on the recently concluded Mahakumbh in Prayagraj.

Earlier, after the Prime Minister’s statement on Mahakumbh, Opposition members created a ruckus due to which Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla adjourned the house till 1 pm.

As soon as the House reassembled at 1 PM, the Congress and other Opposition members came to the well of the house and started creating a ruckus.

When Presiding Officer Jagdambika Pal asked Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to respond to the discussion on the demands for grants for the Railway Ministry for 2025-26, Opposition members intensified their uproar.

Despite the ruckus, Pal repeatedly urged the members not to cause disruption during the Railway Minister’s reply. However, the Opposition members did not pay any heed to his requests and created chaos by raising slogans in the house.

Meanwhile, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised the Opposition members for causing a commotion in the house, stating that they create noise, ignore the responses to their own questions, and then blame the government for not providing answers.

He blamed Congress members for provoking the chaos and strongly condemned their actions.

Meanwhile, Presiding Officer Sandhya Rai asked BJP’s Jagdambika Pal to start discussion on the supplementary grants demands related to the Ministry of Water and Power and Pal started the discussion amidst the uproar.

The Presiding Officer urged the members not to cause disruption and go to their seats but the members ignored her request and continued with the ruckus following which she adjourned the house for the day.

Om Birla earlier clarified that under Rule 372, the Prime Minister and Ministers are allowed to make statements, and no rules were violated during Modi’s address.

He also suggested the Opposition members to review the rules.

Following this, the Speaker called for continuation of discussion on the Railway Ministry’s demands for grants, but due to Opposition’s uproar nothing could be audible.

The noise scenes and ruckus continued despite Birla’s repeated requests to the Opposition members to go back to their seats.

The Speaker asked the Opposition members to go to their respective places, and they will be given a chance to express their views.

When the uproar did not stop despite the Speaker’s request, he adjourned the house till 1 pm.
