Paris, Dec 20 (UNI) National mourning will be declared in France on December 23 in connection with devastating Cyclone Chido, which hit the French overseas department of Mayotte, French President Emmanuel Macron said.
Earlier on Thursday, Macron arrived in Mayotte, where he will stay until Friday.
“I will declare national mourning on Monday, December 23. Our flags will be lowered,” Macron said on X on Thursday.
At the same time, French public-sector reinsurer CCR said that the damage caused by the natural disaster in Mayotte will cost insurers between 650 and 800 million euros (between $674 and $829 million).
On Wednesday, the BFMTV broadcaster reported that the death toll from Cyclone Chido in Mayotte had increased to 31, while another 1,400 people were injured.
