- Breast cancer awareness lecture at BMHRC
Bhopal. Every year, February 4 is observed as World Cancer Day to raise awareness about cancer, its causes, prevention, and support for those affected. In this regard, BMHRC hosted an awareness lecture under the program “Women’s Health – A Holistic Approach.”
Dr. Sonveer Singh Gautam, Assistant Professor in the Oncology Department at BMHRC, highlighted the alarming rise in breast cancer cases, increasing by 8-9% annually. In 2015, India recorded 1.5 lakh breast cancer cases, which has now doubled in 2025. Notably, breast cancer accounts for 28% of all cancer cases in the country.
Dr. Gautam stressed that early detection is key. Women over 20 should perform regular self-examinations, while those above 40 must undergo annual mammograms. Early-stage detection ensures easier treatment, lower costs, improved quality of life, and higher survival rates. In contrast, late-stage detection leads to severe complications.
BMHRC’s Acting Director, Dr. Manisha Srivastava, announced that mammography screenings for female staff will commence on Monday. She emphasized that awareness is the strongest weapon against breast cancer, urging women to stay vigilant. A family history of breast cancer increases risk, making regular screenings crucial.
Don’t ignore the warning signs—early detection can save lives!
