Mirwaiz Umar Farooq again placed under house arrest

Srinagar, Sep 8 (UNI) Hurriyat Conference Chairman and Kashmir Chief Cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was again placed under house arrest on Sunday and not allowed to deliver a sermon at Naqshband Sahib shrine ahead of ‘Khawaja Digar’ or congregational Asr pray on the occasion of annual Urs being celebrated in Srinagar.

Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid said that authorities have once again placed ‘Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest since early morning today”.

Mirwaiz was supposed to deliver the sermon ahead of the “khawaja Digar”, the annual religious occasion to offer congregational “Asr” prayer at Nqashband Sahib shrine in Khanyar on Sunday.

Anjuman said that after 5 years of tribulation the Mirwaiz was about to lead the special Majlis-e-Istigfar and Tauba at the Naqshband Sahib on Sunday.

It said, however, “the authorities in total disregard of our sentiments barred Mirwaiz once again from being able to fulfill his religious and social obligation”.

Anjuman strongly condemned the house arrest of Mirwaiz and called it a “blatant interference in the religious affairs”.

“It is deeply unfortunate that those in authority and governing us are ignorant about our religious and cultural traditions and show no respect for them,” the Anjum said.

The Anjuman demands that the authorities immediately lift the house arrest of Mirwaiz and allow him to deliver his sermon on the special occasion of Khwaja Digar Urs.
