Monsoon mayhem: Heavy showers cause waterlogging in Bhopal

Chronicle Reporter, Bhopal
Bhopal experienced intermittent light to moderate rainfall, resulting in widespread water-logging and inundation in various parts of the city on Sunday afternoon and evening, particularly in low-lying areas. The showers have also affected several districts within the Bhopal Division.

The rainfall began on Sunday afternoon and continued intermittently through the evening, leading to a substantial accumulation of water on the streets and in residential areas. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had previously forecasted active monsoon systems, predicting continued rainfall across the state, including the potential for heavy showers in Bhopal Division and districts of East Madhya Pradesh over the next 2-3 days.

The rainfall caused significant water-logging in numerous parts of Bhopal, particularly in low-lying localities. Streets and residential areas were submerged, posing challenges for commuters. The situation highlighted the city’s vulnerability to heavy rainfall and the need for improved drainage infrastructure.

With showers lashing Bhopal and nearby areas for the last few days, there has been a noticeable increase in the water levels of Bhopal’s key water bodies. The water level in Kolar Dam rose significantly. This reservoir is crucial for the city’s water supply, and its increased level is a positive development in terms of water availability for the coming months.

Similar to Kolar, Kerwa Dam’s water level saw a substantial rise, enhancing the reservoir’s capacity to meet the city’s demands.

Both Upper Lake and Lower Lake experienced a rise in water levels, which is essential for maintaining the ecological balance and supporting recreational activities in the city.

IMD Forecast

The IMD has predicted that the monsoon systems remain active, with expectations of continued rainfall across Madhya Pradesh. The forecast suggests that heavy showers are likely in the districts of East Madhya Pradesh and the Bhopal Division over the next 2-3 days. Residents and local authorities are advised to stay alert and prepared for further rainfall and potential flooding.
