Newly-elected MLAs take oath, Omar retains Ganderbal constituency

Srinagar, Oct 21 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Pro-tem Speaker, Mubarak Gul, administered the oath of office to the newly-elected MLAs in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, officials said.

Chief Minister and Leader of the House, Omar Abdullah, was the first to take the oath. He took his oath in Kashmiri.

Pro-tem Speaker Gul informed the House that Omar Abdullah had resigned as the MLA for Budgam and would represent the Ganderbal constituency.

Abdullah had won from both Budgam and Ganderbal in the recent Assembly elections.

Over 51 MLAs took oath on Monday.

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections were conducted after a decade-long gap. The elections took place in three phases: the first on September 18, followed by the second on September 25, and the third on October 1.

Vote counting occurred on October 8, with the NC emerging as the single largest party winning 42 seats. Following the results, the NC formed a coalition government with the Congress party.

Five independent MLAs, one MLA from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) extended their support to the government.
