Number of custodial deaths increasing in UP under BJP govt: Akilesh

Lucknow, Oct 28 (UNI) Samajwadi Party (SP) President Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has ruined the police system of the state.

In a statement issued here, Akhilesh said, “The police are killing people instead of protecting them. Uttar Pradesh is making new records every year in the case of custodial deaths under the BJP government. The police are torturing innocent people at the behest of BJP leaders and workers,” he alleged.

He said that the behaviour of the police has become exploitative and tyrannical under this government. “The poor people are helpless. The bad image of the police comes to the fore every day in the state. In a place like the capital Lucknow, two youths have died after being beaten up by the police in a fortnight,” he said.

The SP chief alleged that the police have become completely autocratic under this government. “The public has lost faith in the BJP government and the police. Ever since the BJP government came to power in the state, deaths in police custody are increasing every year,” he claimed.

He said, “451 people died in police custody in 2021 in UP, whereas in 2022, this figure increased to 501. The number of deaths in police custody is continuously increasing. Two weeks ago in Lucknow, Aman Gautam died in Vikas Nagar due to a police beating. On Saturday, Mohit Pandey died in Chinhat after being beaten up by Lucknow Police.”

Akhilesh claimed that the BJP government and police are completely insensitive. “They do not hear the pain and cries of the families of the victims. The BJP government has become irrational in the arrogance of power. From the CM to the lower level, the administration is working with a spirit of revenge,” he alleged.

He said that the government has ended democracy and the Constitution in the state. “It has established the rule of dictatorship and terror. The image of UP is being tarnished in the entire state due to deaths in police custody and fake encounters,” he said.
