Kolkata, Sept 6 (UNI) Odisha FC continued their upward trajectory in the Indian Super League (ISL) last season after reaching the playoffs for the first time in the 2022-23 season.
The Kalinga Warriors showed notable improvement in their gameplay under Sergio Lobera, securing a semi-final finish during the 2023-24 season.
This season, Odisha FC has retained their core group of players, including both Indian and foreign talent, while also making key signings. They are now determined to take the next step forward in the ISL and compete for the ultimate prize.
In preparation, they have been focused on a strong pre-season. The Kalinga Warriors are participating in the Bhausaheb Bandodkar Memorial Trophy in Goa as part of their pre-season preparations, where they have reached the final and will face FC Goa for the title on Friday.
“We’re excited about the new ISL season and are working very hard during pre-season. We had the opportunity to participate in the Bhausaheb Bandodkar Memorial Trophy in Goa, preparing the team in the best way possible. We secured wins against an Australian team (Brisbane Roar FC) and an Argentine side (Defensa y Justicia),” Lobera said in an interview with indiansuperleague.com during the media day in Kolkata.
“I think we’re doing a good job (in the pre-season), but our main target is the ISL. We also secured a win against ISL club Chennaiyin FC during pre-season, but that’s in the past. Now, we need to focus on the future. We’re heading into the final and will use this opportunity to prepare ourselves in the best possible way for our first ISL game against Chennaiyin FC,” the Spaniard added.
One of the standout additions to the squad this summer is Spanish attacking midfielder Hugo Boumous, who arrives from Mohun Bagan Super Giant. Boumous, set to reunite with Sergio Lobera after their successful stints together at FC Goa and Mumbai City FC, is expected to have a major impact on the team.
His experience and proven track record in the league will undoubtedly strengthen the side for the upcoming season.
“Yes, he (Hugo Boumous) is a very good player. He is the best-attacking midfielder. However, the most important thing is the team; it’s not about individuality,” he said.
Lobera, who has been one of the most successful coaches in the ISL, is keen to replicate his previous success with Odisha FC. He remained focused on the broader picture, treating every team as a distinct challenge rather than concentrating on any one club.
“I don’t think there’s a single team that stands out. Every team is a bit challenging. We want to compete well against every team,” Lobera remarked.
Carlos Delgado, who has been a reliable presence for the team over the past two seasons, joined alongside Lobera. The centre-back will continue his journey with the club into his third season. The Spaniard is determined to secure more silverware, following his triumph in the Super Cup in 2022.
Discussing the goals for the upcoming season, he remarked, “Our target is to keep progressing and working in the same way because last season went very well. However, we need to take one step further to be competitive for the Shield and the Cup. Our objective is to improve on our performance from last season.”
The 34-year-old has been a crucial defensive presence for the team, building a solid partnership with Mourtada Fall last season and maintaining strong defensive statistics.
Now, reflecting on playing under Lobera, he said, “This is my second season working with him. He has a deep understanding of football, Indian players, and the ISL. It’s fantastic to work with him.”
Odisha FC accomplished the remarkable feat of staying unbeaten at home throughout the ISL season last year. The support from the fans has been exceptional, and Delgado is hopeful it will persist into the new season.
“For me, playing at Kalinga is amazing. The team truly feels the support from the fans, which is very positive for us,” Delgado stated.
Indian forward Rahim Ali also joined the team on media day in Kolkata. Ali made the switch after spending five seasons with Chennaiyin FC.
Having switched clubs, the forward is now looking to elevate his game in the new season.
“I believe that this season could be one of my best if I maintain discipline and professionalism and stay grounded. I have to work hard every single day to be at my best. I’m ready,” Ali stated.
Ali also revealed his reasons for joining the side. He will face competition for his position, with Roy Krishna and Diego Mauricio currently being the primary strikers.
However, he is determined to fight for his place and work hard in training to earn a spot in the starting XI.
“I really like Sergio Lobera’s playing style, which is why I decided to join Odisha FC. It’s taking some time for me to adapt to his style, but I am working hard to do so,’ Ali said.
“Yes, there is competition everywhere, but I have to prove myself and work hard every single day. It’s not easy to secure a spot in the coach’s starting eleven, but I hope I’ll get my chance,” he commented.
