Over 4500 motorists prosecuted in Delhi on eve of New Year: Delhi Police

New Delhi, Jan 1 (UNI) Over 4,500 motorists, including those involved in drunken driving and dangerous driving, were prosecuted for various traffic violations on the eve of New Year 2025, the Delhi Police said on Wednesday.

“This year, on New Year’s Eve, a total of 558 motorists were prosecuted for drunken driving, compared to 416 in 2023, 318 in 2022, 25 in 2021, 19 in 2020, and 299 in 2019,” the Delhi Traffic Police said in a statement.

“On December 31, a special drive was carried out across Delhi, during which a total of 4,583 motorists were prosecuted for various violations. These included 558 for drunken driving, 35 for dangerous driving, 205 for driving on the wrong side, 35 for triple riding, and 648 for riding without a helmet. Additionally, 63 vehicles were impounded on the spot,” the Police added.

“88 teams equipped with breath analyzers were deployed to check drunken driving on New Year’s Eve. Special pickets were set up to prevent stunts on motorcycles, overspeeding, reckless driving, zig-zagging, and other forms of dangerous driving. These measures were implemented in coordination with local police and PCR units at major points, including Connaught Place, Mehrauli, Saket, Nehru Place, Vasant Vihar, and Mayur Vihar,” the police said.

There were four deaths reported in fatal road accidents on New Year’s Eve 2024. However, no fatalities were reported on New Year’s Eve 2025.

Moreover, traffic advisories for New Year’s Eve were uploaded on the social media platforms of the Delhi Traffic Police, which received cooperation and appreciation from the general public. This contributed to the smooth conduct and regulation of traffic.

Elaborate traffic arrangements were made throughout the city for the smooth management of traffic on New Year’s Eve. Special measures were implemented in areas such as Connaught Place, India Gate, Saket, M-Block Market in Greater Kailash, Chirag Delhi, New Friends Colony, Defence Colony, South Extension, Mehrauli, Aya Nagar Border, Khanpur, Nehru Place near Eros Hotel, Govind Puri Metro Station, Qutab Minar, Hauz Khas Village, Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj, Kapashera, Dwarka, Rajouri Garden, Netaji Subhash Place, and other key locations.

To monitor traffic violations, traffic staff were strategically deployed at various points across the city, the police said.
