Khammam (Telangana), Apr 12 (UNI) Padma Shri awardee and renowned environmentalist ‘Vanajeevi’ Ramaiah died in his native village, Reddipalli, in this district in the early hours of Saturday due to a heart attack.
He was 85 and is survived by his wife Janamma and four children.
Known for his deep love for nature, Ramaiah had even changed his surname to “Vanajeevi”, meaning “forest being”, reflecting his lifelong commitment to environmental conservation.
Over his lifetime, he is credited with planting and nurturing more than one crore (10 million) plants, setting an inspiring example of individual dedication to reforestation and green living.
In recognition of his extraordinary service to nature and society, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri award in 2017.
Ramaiah’s passing has left nature lovers and the community in deep mourning. Large numbers of people, including admirers and well-wishers, are visiting his residence to pay their final respects. Several political leaders have also paid tribute to the green crusader.
