Pakistan asks Afghanistan to step up fight against terrorism

Islamabad, Aug 26 (UNI) Pakistan wants the Afghan authorities to take effective steps to root out terrorist threats to Islamabad in Afghan territory, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mumtaz Zahra Baloch has told Sputnik.

“It is crucial that there be peace in Afghanistan, and that all terrorist groups and lone terrorists sheltering in the country be brought to justice… They are threatening security in Pakistan. We said that we will not negotiate with these groups, as they are responsible for the deaths of civilians, security and police officials in Pakistan,” Baloch said.

Pakistan has asked Afghanistan to take “specific and effective measures” against terrorists, who it says pose a threat to Pakistan and the entire region. Baloch said Islamabad had shared information with Kabul about specific individuals in Afghanistan whom it suspected of attacks on Pakistan.

Pakistani envoy to the United Nations Munir Akram told Newsweek in August that Pakistan was concerned about the increasing threat of terrorist spillover from Afghanistan. Akram suggested that the underlying causes of terrorist resurgence be addressed.
