Pakistan: Eight killed as minivan plunges into drainage in Punjab

Islamabad, Feb 21 (UNI) Eight people were killed and two others injured when a minivan plunged into an open drainage channel in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province early Friday, local police said.

The accident took place in the Kasur district when the minivan carrying members of a music group was returning from a wedding function and veered off the road into a nullah, the police told local media.

Rescue teams and the police reached the scene and shifted the victims to a nearby hospital. Officials said eight people died on the spot, while two others sustained injuries.

Preliminary reports suggest that the driver may have dozed off while driving, leading to the accident, rescue officials said.

Road accidents in Pakistan have become an alarming issue, with a significant increase in both frequency and severity over the years. Reckless driving, poor road conditions, and inadequate vehicle maintenance are among the primary causes of the high accident rate.
