2nd ODI: Guptill, Taylor fifties guide New Zealand to 273-8 against India

Auckland, Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor smashed fifties to guide New Zealand to a challenging total of 273/8 against India in the second ODI of the three-match series at Eden Park, here on Saturday. Guptill scored a run-a-ball 79 while Ross Taylor scored 73 off 74. Apart from Guptill and Taylor, Herny Nicholls also played a crucial knock of 41 runs for Kiwis. Yuzvendra Chahal (3/58) claimed three wickets, Shardul Thakur (2/60) took two wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja (1/35) snapped one and effected a run-out for India.

After being put into bat first by India captain Virat Kohli, New Zealand were off to a great start, scoring 52/0 in the first power play. Yuzvendra Chahal in the 17th over broke the 93-run opening partnership as Henry Nicholls was trapped leg before wicket after scoring 41 runs. After Nicholls wicket, Tom Blundell came next to bat and along with Guptill he took Kiwis to 108/1 after 20 overs. During the process, Guptill reached his half-century from 49 deliveries and also became New Zealand’s highest run-scorer at home.

Tom Blundell and Guptill added 50 runs for the second wicket before Blundell lost his wicket to Shardul Thakur in the 27th over. However, Martin Guptill's run out for 79 in the 30th over became a turning point of the match in Auckland. Once he got out, New Zealand failed to hold their wickets together and build a partnership.
