China is ready to join efforts with the international community on finding the origin of the coronavirus pandemic, but this process should not be politicized, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Sunday.

“The Chinese side has an open position regarding the scientific cooperation with the international scientific community to study the origin of the coronavirus. At the same time, we believe that this process should be professional, fair and constructive.

By fair we mean that in the study of the [COVID-19] origin, political interference should be avoided,” the minister said at his annual press conference. The minister also said that during this process, the sovereignty of all countries must be respected, adding that Beijing opposed the “presumption of guilt.” Defending the World Health Organisation’s COVID-19 response,

Wang Yi said that the health organisation has made timely recommendations on the issue of coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic. “Since the very beginning, the WHO led by Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus followed science and provided timely and professional recommendations on all aspects. It did a great job and fulfilled its mandate,” the minister said.

In an apparent reference to the global blame on Beijing for COVID19 pandemic, Wang Yi said that selfconceit and blame-shifting will not help any country solve this problem but will only hurt other country’s legitimate rights and interests. “The disaster wrecks havoc watching from an apparently safe distance and sitting idle will eventually backfire. Pointing fingers at others will only damage one’s own reputation,” he said.
