Classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj dies in US


New Delhi, (UNI) World-renowned classical musician Pandit Jasraj died in New Jersey, US on Monday, due to cardiac arrest.

The legendary musician, belonging to Mewati Gharana, was 90-years-old.

According to information given by the family of Pandit Jasraj, he breathed his last at 0515 hrs (local time).

Jasraj was born on January 28, 1930 in Pili Mandori, a village in Hisar, Haryana.

He began training as a vocalist at the age of 14. He initially trained as a classical vocalist with Pandit Maniram, and later with Jaiwant Singh Waghela, a vocalist and beenkar, and then with Gulam Qadir Khan of Mewati Gharana.

He was awarded Padma Shri in 1975, Padma Bhushan in 1990 and Padma Vibhushan in 2000.
