Govt gives permission to import 10 lakh ton potatoes


New Delhi, Oct 30 (UNI) The central government has given permission to import 10 lakh tonnes potatoes in view of increasing its availability in the domestic market.

The government has also decreased the import duty which was earlier 30 per cent to now 10 per cent, according to a notification issued here by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade.

The import of ten lakh ton potatoes will have to be completed by January 31, 2021.

Other than this, to import potato from Bhutan, there will not be a need of any such permission, as per the notification.

Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal in a press conference here said that the government is implementing various measures to maintain the availability of potato and onions.

The government has also made available the Onion and Potato in the domestic market that were kept in the buffer storages, and other than that it has also given the permission to import Onions and it will be done before Diwali.
