Modi inaugurates RoPax terminal in Gujarat


New Delhi, Nov 8 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated RoPax terminal at Hazira in Gujarat which will reduce the travel time between Saurashtra and South-Gujarat from 10-12 to 3-4 hours through the waterway services.

Mr Modi also flagged off the ferry service between Hazira and Ghogha through videoconferencing and called the terminal as a "Diwali gift" to the people of Gujarat."The people of Gujarat have got their Diwali gift. Everyone will benefit from this better connectivity," the Prime Minister said.

Mr Modi said about 80,000 passenger trains and 30,000 trucks will be able to take advantage of this new service in a year.

"Fruits, vegetables and milk can now easily be transported and pollution will also be reduced due to this service," he said.In another parallel development, the Prime Minister renamed the Ministry of Shipping as the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.Mr Modi lauded the way Gujarat realised its maritime potential in the last two decades and gave priority to port led development.

He listed the initiatives of the Gujarat government like drafting a shipbuilding policy, construction of shipbuilding park and specialised terminals, promotion of vessel traffic management system and connectivity project.
