Aircel-Maxis deal: ED raids premises of Karti, PC


Chennai, Enforcement Directorate sleuths on Saturday searched premises in Chennai and New Delhi belonging to Karti Chidambaram, son of senior Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, on money laundering charges in the Aircel-Maxis case. The ED case pertained to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board approval granted in 2006 by the then FM P Chidambaram.Searches were carried out in connection with INX media money laundering case filed against Karti Chidambaram by ED in May last year. In the Capital, the Congress party termed as malicious vendetta' the raids by the Enforcement Directorate. The ED and the CBI, the opposition party stated, were being used as 'captive puppets' to take political revenge. All India Congress Committee media incharge Randeep Surjewala told a TV channel that they were not surprised by the malicious vendetta being unleashed against senior Congress leaders, including P Chidambaram and his son. "Everyday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government use the ED and the Central Bureau of investigation (CBI) as captive puppets to seek revenge from the opposition,' he said. In New Delhi, an official source confirmed the raids.ED sources said the raids were held at Mr P Chidambaram's residences in Delhi and Chennai and at the office premises of Karti in Chennai. The raids at the premises of Mr P Chidambaram in Chennai ended within three hours, during which no documents were taken by the ED authorities.Both Mr Chidambaram and his son were not present at the house when the searches took place. Arun Natarajan, counsel for Karti, told reporters that the searches were held in connection with the Aircel-Maxis case.A total of five officials were involved in the search operation and they could not find anything during the raids. 'Neither they found any documents, nor they took anything with them', he said.The ED had on 1st December 2017, conducted similar raids at the premises of a relative of Karti and others in the case.ED had issued fresh summons to Karti Chidambaram in INX media case on January 16 after he skipped his appearance before ED on 11th January.
