Asaram's fall from grace from spiritual guru to rape accused

New Delhi, Fate of controversial spiritual guru Asaram Bapu whose life has been a roller coaster ride from a tea seller to spiritual guru and then to a rape accused, is hanging in balance with the Jodhpur court set to pronounce its verdict on Wednesday. He was born as Asumal Sirumalani on April 17, 1941 in Pakistan. After the partition, Asumal's family shifted to Gujarat where the entire financial burden of the family fell on him as his father Thaumal Sirumalani's passed away. During 1958-59, Asaram worked as a tea-seller in front of the Magistrate's office. There was an allegation of murder on him and his relatives in the influence of alcohol. But luck favoured him and he got acquitted due to lack of evidence. In 1960s, Asumal turned to liquor-seller from a tea-seller. After this, he also worked in a milk dairy where he used to earn Rs 300 per month. But, he left that job soon and disappeared from there and emerged as a self- appointed godman who earned millions of followers within no time. His popularity as a spiritual guru continued till 2013,when a series of cases including that of murder, rape, land grabbing surfaced against him giving a jolt to his millions of devotees. However, this could not shake the faith of a large number of followers who are seeking divine intervention by chanting, fasting and praying for release. In view of today's verdict in Jodhpur rape case, security has been heightened in Rajasthan, Gujarat and New Delhi fearing violence by his supporters.
