Big upsets - Roger Federer out of the chase for 9th Wimbledon

For England its not coming home By Yashovardhan Maheshwari Noticeably there were sad faces all around as yesterday was the day of big upsets . Roger Federer crashing out of the Wimbledon and England ending their world cup run with a defeat to Croatia. Both the results came as a huge shock to the fans as well as to the world as the two favourites of their respective tournaments were shown the door. Roger Federer who hadn't dropped a set in his run to the quarterfinals seemed impressive in his first set against world no. 8, Kevin Anderson who was absolutely outclassed. But in the following sets Federer fell apart to a praiseworthy comeback by his opponent. Federer was far from his best in the match which was played at court no. 1, a change of court from his more familiar , the center court . The No. 1 seed who blew a third set match point lost in a 5 set entertainer. The scorecard which read 2-6, 6-7(5),7-5, 6-4, 13-11 broke the master, Federer. Chants of ‘ come on Roger’ could be heard all around the court as the master himself seemed to struggle against the big serves of the South African, Kevin Anderson. Roger’s forehand was tentative and brittle and he had a bit of nervousness in his body language which may have come from a dispute with his sponsors, which maybe on his mind . Federer could not hide his disappointment as he said “ It was just one of the days where you hope to get by somehow . I almost could have “ For England, it was doom day as the hot favourites to win the 2018 Russia World cup were outclassed by an extra time goal(109’) from Mandžuki? who emerged as a hero for Croatia and sent them through to their first ever final. The 2-1 scoreline in favour of Croatia left England fans in tears. England had started brilliantly, striking as early as the 5th minute but the pressurising counter attacks from Croatia broke England’s defence apart and Croatia equalised in the 68th minute by a stunning goal from Ivan Periši? and from there it was no turning back for the underdog Croatian team . Croatia had an impeccable run at the world cup 2018 ,they defeated Argentina, Russia and many more but England was touted to send this brilliant team back home but it was not to be.  “It's coming home” had become the unofficial anthem for England football and could be heard all around Russia and UK as Gareth Southgate’s team had relit the nation’s fire and made them believe that its England's chance to win their second world cup repeating the 1966 feat.  Even though England is out of the World cup there are a lot of positives they carry back with 2022 world cup in mind.
