BJP insists polling should be held as per schedule for Patkura assembly in Odisha

New Delhi, A BJP delegation led by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday met Election Commission here and urged the poll panel not to postpone polling in Patkura assembly constituency in Odisha. The demand by BJP delegation comprising Union Minister Mr Pradhan and party leaders Aparajita Sarangi and Sambit Patra came a day after Odisha Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik for his part urged EC to defer the polls due to Cyclone Fani. The BJP delegation also alleged that in the wake of alertness about cyclone, the state Chief Minister Mr Patnaik is "arm twisting the relaxation in Model Code of Conduct and operating cyclone relief and restoration for political benefits even before the landfall of the Cyclone Fani". "In our view elections should be held as per schedule as of now, the Election Commission may take a decision based on field reports on the severity of damages arising out of the cyclone," Mr Pradhan later said. "The impact and severity of the cyclone will be known sufficiently before May 19, therefore it is too early to take a call on postponing the elections. Also since the cyclone will landfall in Odisha on May 3, there will be still sufficient gap for relief and restoration". "Elections at Patkura shall be held on 19th May, Cyclone FANI is likely to hit Odisha coast on 3rd May. As per Meteorology assessment the cyclone will likely fall near Puri, while the distance from place of landfall to Patkura is 200 KMs," Mr Pradhan tweeted.
