BJP twisting my words to hide their own failures: Sam Pitroda

5/10/2019

New Delhi, After he stirred a controversy on Thursday with his comments on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Indian Overseas Congress chief and close aide of Congress president Rahul Gandhi Sam Pitroda on Friday said BJP was twisting his words to "hide" their own failures and said the late Rajiv Gandhi would never target a group of people based on creed. 'I have noticed how BJP is again twisting three words from my interview to distort facts, divide us and hide their failures. Sad that they have nothing positive to offer. I acknowledged the pain of my Sikh brothers and sisters during difficult times in 1984 and deeply feel for the atrocities that happened,' Pitroda said in a series of tweets. Pitroda had earlier stirred a controversy while he was responding to the BJP claim citing the Nanavati commission report that the instructions for the 1984 violence came from former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi after his mother Indira Gandhi was assassinated. Pitroda said, 'I don't think so, this is also another lie, and what about 1984? You speak about what you have done in the last five years. It happened in 1984, so what?' Talking to reporters, Pitroda said 'You were voted to create jobs. You were voted to create 200 smart cities. You have not even done that. You have not done anything that is why you keep talking here and there," he added. In his tweets on Friday, Pitroda said, 'Rajiv Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi will never target a group of people based on creed. But these are things from past that are not really relevant to this election which is all about what did Modi government do for the last five years. BJP is talking about these issues and attacking Congress leaders with lies because they can not talk about their performance and have no vision to take India forward to inclusively growth and prosperity for all with focus on Jobs, kids and more Jobs.' 'Truth is being distorted, lies are being amplified through social media and targeted People are systematically being intimidated. However, truth will always prevail and lies will be exposed. It is just a matter of time. Have patience,' he tweeted. Pitroda's remarks had been criticised by BJP leaders. Terming the 'Hua to Hua' reaction by close aide of Congress president Rahul Gandhi Sam Pitroda on the 1984 Sikh riots as 'a matter of disgrace', senior BJP leader and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Friday said it was reflective of the lack of remorse on the part of Congress Party with respect to the Sikh killings of 1984. In a series of tweets, Mr Jaitley asked whether the Congress President would oust his 'Guru' on the remarks. 'It is a matter of disgrace that the Congress Party has no remorse over the Sikh killings of 1984. Sam Pitroda's 'Hua to Hua' reaction to the 1984 Sikh killings is reflective of the lack of remorse on the part of Congress Party with respect to the 1984 genocide,' Mr Jaitley said. 'Will the Congress President oust his 'Guru', who rubbishes the genocide of India's most patriotic community in 1984?,' he asked.
