Cong to launch nationwide campaign against rising prices of petrol, diesel

New Delhi, Expressing its concern over the sharp rise in the prices of petrol and diesel during the rule of the NDA Government at the Centre, the Congress on Tuesday said it plans to come out on the streets and launch a nationwide campaign against the ruling regime on the issue. Talking to reporters here, AICC spokesperson Manish Tewari said,'the common man of the country is bearing the brunt of sharp increase in prices of petrol and diesel. To voice the concern of the public, the Congress will take to the streets, from Kashmir to Kanniyakumari, to protest on the issue.' Criticising a statement by a spokesperson of the BJP that the rise in the prices of petrol and diesel was good for the state governments as it would help them reap additional revenue, Mr Tewari said,'the statement reflects the mindset of the BJP.' Reminding that the BJP had, in 2008, described the hike in petrol prices by the then UPA Government from Rs 48 per litre to Rs 50 per litre, when the price of international crude oil was ruling at 156 dollars per barrel, as 'economic terrorism', Mr Tewari said,'now, when the international crude oil prices are at 70 dollars per barrel and the petrol is at Rs 79 per litre in Delhi, I want to ask the Petroleum minister whether the increase in prices of these products should not be classified under the definition of 'economic terrorism'.' He said that the Congress will hold a meeting of senior ministers to outline the strategy for the nationwide campaign against the rise in prices of petroleum products.
