Creative diplomacy can build up multilateralism: Jaishankar

Munich, In a world which has turned more nationalistic, multilateralism can be strengthened by more creative diplomacy and plurilateral understanding, says External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. "There is no question the world is more nationalistic. The US, China and different countries in the world are more nationalistic. A lot of this nationalism has been electorally validated. There are countries where it is a positive assertive nationalism. In some cases, it is more insecure nationalism. The fact is, a more nationalistic world is obviously a less multilateral world," Jaishankar said at the ongoing Munich Security Conference.

Participating in a panel discussion about "Westlessness and Multilateralism" at the MSC2020 on Friday, he said: "multilateralism can today be strengthened by more creative diplomacy and plurilateral understanding." The annual conference, known as the "Davos" of global security and political events, has been an important forum for top officials to discuss major issues facing the world since its inception in 1963.

The theme this year is "Westlessness," the loss of the common standing of what it means to be part of the West, according to a security report published on Monday. "Important that global security conversations should hear the views of India," Jaishankar later tweeted. He highlighted the global political rebalancing underway after 20 years of economic rebalancing in the world and made a case for greater Western flexibility.

The EAM also called for making the United Nations more credible. "There is something that needs to be done there," Jaishankar said. At the conference, Jaishankar met US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and took "stock of the relationship" as the India looked forward to President DonalD Trump visit to the country later this month.
