Farmers hold demo over losses in silk farming


Chronicle Reporter, Bhopal The farmers staged demonstration in the capital on Monday in protest against alleged cheating in the name of silk farming. Hundreds of farmers reached the capital from neighbouring places all over the state including Hoshangabad, Khandwa, Khargone, Bankhedi and Pipariya and called on Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and demanded that their grievance be redressed. The farmers said the Sericulture Department had encouraged them to rear silkworm in 2013 saying the CM wants to make farming a profitable enterprise. But no facilities for silkworm rearing was provided as promised. The farmers said they had signed five-year contract with the government and signed on Rs 500 stamp in this regard. They said no houses were provided for silkworm rearing as promised. The farmers said they have suffered huge losses in silk farming. They have demanded the government to provide compensation for the losses incurred by them in the last four years.
