FLO welcomes exemption of GST on sanitary napkins, tax reduction on house hold items

Agencies, Hyderabad, FICCI Ladies Organization (FLO), the women wing of apex business body Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) has welcomed exemption of sanitary napkins and Rakhi’s from present Goods and Service Tax (GST) as well as reduction of tax on some other essential house hold items. The taxation on house hold items, including refrigerators, storage water heaters, washing machines and television sets have been reduced by the GST Council and termed it a concentrated effort by the government to achieve the goal of Women empowerment as well as special emphasis on gender development. In a statement here on Sunday, FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) President Pinky Reddy said “Exemption of GST on Sanitary napkins is welcome as it is a great step towards empowering women as sanitary napkins are necessary for female hygiene . This is a big step towards encouraging menstrual hygiene among young girls and women as scrapping of GST from Sanitary napkins will make napkins more affordable and more women will be able to use them. Exempting Rakhi’s from GST is a great move just before coming Rakhi festival.” “ GST Council’s decision to reduce taxation on host of daily house hold goods including refrigerators, washing machines and water heaters along with making the process of filing GST simpler is also welcome.” she said. While hailing the decision of GST Council to allow ITC refund for Textiles sector, Dr A Sakthivel, Regional Chairman, FIEO thanked Union Textiles Minister Smriti Zubin Irani for her dynamism, vision and effectiveness in functioning which helped the Textile sector to gain various supports including latest announcement of ITC credit refund for the sector. The GST Council on Saturday approved GST refund of Input Tax Credit (ITC) to Textiles sector with effect from July 27 after strong pitch by the Textiles Minister, a statement here said.
