Footfalls increase as Bagh Utsav draws towards close


Chronicle Reporter, Bhopal The ‘Bagh Utsav’ that began at Gauhar Mahal from February 6 is evoking a good response by the Bagh print lovers of the city as the fair draws towards close. The fair, which will conclude on February 14, exhibits the rarest collection of bagh prints in almost all textiles. The exhibition-cum-sale is jointly organised by Mrignaynee Handloom Emporium and Madhya Pradesh Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation. This show put up by Bagh print artist known for giving a new form to the years old Bagh print, Ismail Suleman Khatri. Since early fifties the Khatris are practicing this art in Dhar. While talking to The Pioneer, son of Ismail Suleman Khatri and a National Awardee for handicraft and handloom materials for Bagh prints Umar Farukh Khatri says, “Our whole family practices this profession, we have put up various shows across the country.” Elaborating further he said, “The specialty of our work which makes it different from others is that we practice this art on almost all the materials like cotton, crape, chiffon, Maheshwari and Chanderi. Moreover, my father first did on saris, lehengas and other dress materials.” The female buyers are being captivated towards the fair and are buying the Bagh print in huge number. The cost of dress materials begins from Rs 400 to Rs 1800. While the cost of bed sheets begins from Rs 300 to Rs 6000 and finally the saris are the major attraction which starts from Rs 500 to Rs 4000. Different motifs in Maheshwari and Chanderi material are displayed in exhibition. There is an array of vibrant colours like green, ocean green and ocean blue along with shades of yellow, brown, sky colours and colours in contrast.The female buyers are being captivated towards the fair and are buying the bagh print in huge number. From short kurtis to full salwar suit, the female participants are overwhelmed with the kind of fine Karigari done over the cloth material. The ladies out there are enthralled to watch bagh prints in such bright and vibrant colours. The female buyers are also buying the bagh printed bed sheets for this season.
