HC grants interim protection to Chidambaram in INX Media case

New Delhi, Delhi High Court on Wednesday granted interim protection from arrest till August 1 to former Union Minister P Chidambaram in INX Media case. The High Court order came on an anticipatory bail plea filed by Chidambaram who was apprehending arrest in INX Media cases lodged by Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Court directed the ED not to take any coercive action against Chidambaram till August 1.Counsel for ED opposed the plea of Chidambaram on the basis of maintainability. Counsel for Chidambaram submitted before the court that they were apprehending arrest as CBI had said it required custodial interrogation of Chidambaram. He further submitted that the only difference was that this petition related to the ED's case while the other one in which Chidambaram had already got protection from arrest was of CBI. CBI had registered an FIR in INX Media case on May 15, 2017 by alleging irregularities in the FIPB clearance to the media group for receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when Chidambaram was Finance Minister and after that ED had lodged the Money Laundering case. In this matter investigating agency was investigating the case of Aircel Maxis deal of Rs 3500 crore and the INX Media case involving Rs 305 crore. While granting interim protection, the High Court directed Chidambaram to cooperate with the investigating agency as and when required and not to leave the country without the permission of the court. The court further directed ED not to take any coercive steps against Chidambaram till August 1.
