Indian Parl & Russian Duma pledge to enhance ties and encourage young lawmakers
New Delhi, Dec 10 (UNI) Indian Parliament and Parliamentary delegation from Russian Federation on Monday decided to enhance "parliamentary diplomacy" between two countries and ensure strategic cooperation, military and security cooperation in multiple sectors. The announcement to this effect was made by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Chairman of the State Duma of Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Volodin here. "We have noted with satisfaction the progress in India-Russia relations and have agreed to continue this trajectory of closer cooperation, coordination and consolidation of gains to surge ahead," Ms Mahajan told reporters. She said the press conference was organised near the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Parliament premises as this was aimed at underlining the significance of Mahatma Gandhi's teachings as the calendar year 2019 also coincides with his 150th birth anniversary. The deliberations on Monday was the fifth meeting of Inter Parliamentary Commission and that has acknowledged that "meaningful participation" of the people including youth and women in the democratic practices is of "crucial importance for the sustenance of democracy". "The needs and necessities of the youth as well as women to ensure a life of dignity for them and to encourage their development have to be reiterated. It was, therefore, felt that engaging the youth and women in vital areas of development would go a long way in fostering development and bilateral relations", she said. Mr Volodin said the Russian Parliamentary delegation's interactions with Indian counterparts and also meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, who is also chairman of the Rajya Sabha, have been very fruitful. Both the leaders underlined the importance of life and works of Mahatma Gandhi and Leo Tolstoy and how these can be crucial to boost ties and interactions between lawmakers in both the countries. Mr Volodin said there is "cordial atmosphere" between both sides especially in the context of improved relations worked by the leaderships of Prime Minister Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent years. Agreeing with Ms Mahajan, the visiting Chairman of State Duma also said there should be more interactions between young lawmakers from both the countries.
