Jay Shah defamation case: Showdown nears in apex court


New Delhi, The Supreme Court on Wednesday suggested that lawyers representing a web portal news journalist, resolve the differences over an article written by her with Jay Shah, the son of Bharatiya Janata Party chief, Amit Shah. Counsel, appearing for the web portal journalist said, the report was published in public interest and there was no question of settlement. Jay Shah's counsel had told the apex court that his client was open to a settlement. On the last hearing, the Supreme Court said the matter will be listed before an appropriate bench. Led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, the bench fixed July first week for final disposal of the matter. On March 15, the apex court had asked the Gujarat Magistrate not to proceed against the journalist of the web portal till the matter is being heard in connection with Jay Shah defamation case. The web portal scribe had approached the apex court after the Gujarat High Court had dismissed her plea declining to quash the case against her.The petition sought quashing of the criminal defamation proceedings against the journalist.
