Ken-Betwa River Link

Ultimately the country’s first Central river link project of linking Ken and Betwa rivers will be launched in the coming March month with the laying of foundation stone by the Prime Minister Mr.Narendra Modi. Prime Minister Mr.Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced it in 1999 from the rampart of Red Fort in his Independence Day message. Then too it could not materialized because of discord between the Government of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh on gain and loss out of it and cost of the project. It was a slur on Mr.Vajpayee that his such a vital announcement was ignored. Mr.Nitin Gadkari the Union Water Resources Minister in the Modi Government took it as a challenge. He summoned the Chief Ministers of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh Mr.Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Yogi Adityanath and asked them to settle it before him and he secured the total agreement. Earlier it was decided that Centre will contribute in the cost on the basis of 60 per cent by the Central Government and 40 per cent by both the State Government 20 per cent each. Now the Centre has decided to contribute 90 per cent cost it and the MP and UP will share 10 per cent divided by five per cent for each of them. The total cost of the Ken-Betwa project is 18,000 crores of rupees. The project will pave the way for all other river linking projects as a model project.
