Mayawati concerned over Ambedkar statue vandalisation

New Delhi, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Saturday expressed grief and concern over defacement of statues of Dr B R Ambedkar in Uttar Pradesh. There have been two instances where Dalit icon Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar’s statues were reportedly vandalised by unknown assailants in Uttar Pradesh. One incident was reported from Siddharthnagar’s Gohaniya in the state whereas another instance was recorded from Allahabad. In a statement here, she alleged that the Yogi Government in Uttar Pradesh should shed its insensitivity and try to control such casteist incidents. These incidents of vandalisation and disfigurement of statues in Allahabad and Siddharth Nagar were giving a bad name to the state and the government, so such incidents should be curbed at the earliest, she demanded. Accusing the government of using BR Ambedkar's name for the sake of votes of weaker sections of society, she said merely reconstruction of broken statues won't rectify the matter, but law and order should be strictly enforced. Ms Mayawati expressed her concern over the incident in Gujarat, where a Dalit youth was allegedly killed in Bhavnagar district by upper caste men for owning and riding a horse, and demanded that the guilty be punished. The BJP governments in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat should take stern action so that incidents against Dalits and the weak were not repeated in future, she demanded.
