A militant was killed and an Assistant Commandant (AC) of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was injured during an encounter which ensued after a Cordon and Search operation was launched against militants in summer capital, Srinagar on Saturday.
In Srinagar, civil secretariat, seat of the government, is scheduled to reopen on Monday after shifting from Jammu, winter capital.The encounter was going on when the reports last came in.
A police spokesman said that the Army, Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint CASO at Rampora Chattabal area of the city following a tip off about the presence of militants at 0500 hrs.
However, when the security forces were sealing the area, the militants hiding there opened indiscriminate fire with automatic weapons at about 0700 hrs. Security forces also retaliated, ensuing a fierce encounter.
Two to three militants are believed to be holed up in the area. Repeated announcement was being made through public address system asking holed up militants to surrender.
CRPF Assistant Commandant Lambocha Singh was injured in the encounter, they said.'We could see the body of a militant in the house,' sources told UNI. Since firing was going on, the body could not be recovered, the sources added.
Meanwhile, massive clashes erupted at several places in Srinagar, where majority shops and business establishments remained closed. Security forces also burst teargas shells to disperse the demonstrators at several places in the downtown and civil lines.
