Prime Minister Narendra Modi saluted the women power in 2018’s first ‘Mann ki Baat’ on Sunday.
Mr Modi recalled the achievements of American astronaut and the first woman of Indian origin in space, Kalpana Chawla, who flew on Space Shuttle Columbia, saying she set an example for the daughters of India and taught them that nothing was impossible for them.
‘Today we talk about ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’, but ages ago, our holy books said that one daughter is worth 10 sons,’ he said quoting a verse from Skanda Purana.‘India’s Nari Shakti has contributed a lot in the positive transformation being witnessed in our country and society,’ said the Prime Minister on Sunday.
He also mentioned Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Rani Lakshmi Bai, Akka Mahadevi, Meerabai, Indian philosophers in Vedic Literature Gargi and Maitreyi among others.‘BSF biker contingent with women personnel was the highlight of Republic Day parade.
Even the chief guests for the event were surprised,’ said Mr Modi in 40th edition of the programme, which was broadcast on All India Radio (AIR), Doordarshan and also on the Narendra Modi mobile application.
Empowerment is a form of self-reliance, he said, adding that,’Today our women power is leading and becoming self-sufficient. Our tribal women of Chhattisgarh have also done amazing thing.’He said tribal women who carry wooden blocks on their head,have presented a new picture in front of the country.
‘In Dantewada, Chhattisgarh, which is a Maoism-affected area, tribal women were becoming self-reliant by running e-rickshaws. And there are three benefits to it — self-employment, changing picture of Maoist-affected area and environmental protection,’ Mr Modi said and appreciated the district administration for providing support.
He started off the programme mentioning Mr Prakash Tripathi who had written him a letter on NarendraModiApp and asked him to mention various topics.He mentioned all-women crew encircling the whole world on INSV Tarini.
Mr Modi was also all praise for three brave women — Bhavana Kanth, Mohna Singh and Avni Chaturvedi, who were trained as Fighter Pilots and were now flying Sukhoi-30.
He also mentioned Shamta Vajpayee-led all-Women Crew who flew from Delhi to San Francisco in the US and back in Air India Boeing Jet. ‘You said absolutely right - women are not only moving forward but also leading also,’ he said.
President Ram Nath Kovind met a group of extraordinary women who were ‘the first’ in their respective areas, Mr Modi said. ‘These women achievers of the country, First Lady Merchant Navy Captain, the first female train driver of the passenger train, the first woman fire fighter, the first woman bus driver, the first woman to reach Antartica, the first woman to reach Everest — in this way, First Ladies’ .
‘Our women’s powers have achieved extraordinary achievements by breaking the conservatives of the society, establishing a record.’These women have showed that a new path can be drawn up by crossing all obstacles and on the strength of hard work and determination. A path that will inspire not only their peers but also the future generations, the Prime Minister said.
‘A book will be prepared on these women achievers— the first ladies— so that the whole country can take inspiration from them, their lives and their actions. It is also available on the NarendraModi website as an e-book,’ he said.
Mr Modi mentioned a railway station while discussing women empowerment. He talked about Mumbai’s Matunga Station which is the first in India where all 40 employees are women. ‘They take care of all departments — whether it is a commercial, Railway Police, Ticket Checking, Announcements or Point Person,’ he said.
Mr Modi mentioned one of most-talked about all-women BSF Biker Contingent in the Republic Day Parade which left foreign guests amazed.He also praise the women Padma award winners, including healer Lakshmikutty and social activist Maiti Nepal.
