Modi will go down in history as mere "Stuntman": Congress

5/7/2019

New Delhi, Launching a tirade against the ruling dispensation over a number of issues including joblessness, black money, economy, distress in MSMEs and rural economy, the Congress on Tuesday termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as stuntman as he failed to deliver on a historical mandate given by the people in 2014. Addressing a press conference here, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, "PM Modi, you fought the last Lok Sabha election on the promise two crore jobs per annum, 15 lakh in our pockets, 100 smart cities and cheaper Petrol diesel! We will like to fight the next two phases on these very issues, so that the people are able to see through your diversionary games and assess you for yourself. You were given a historical opportunity by the people of this country. However, you will go down in history as a mere stuntman rather than a statesman!." On May 4, Mr Modi had attacked former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi while speaking at an election rally in Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh constituency, which adjoins Amethi and directly addressing Rahul Gandhi, the Congress candidate from that seat, he said, "Your father was termed 'Mr Clean' by his courtiers, but his life ended as 'Bhrashtachari No 1." Reacting sharply over his comment, the Congress leader said, "PM Modi has lost his political balance. His mannerisms, his body language, his abuses in the speeches are indicative of which way the elections are going. The diatribe and reprehensible abuse which he is spewing in his speeches is not lowering the dignity of his office, but hurting India’s image at large." Highlighting the developmental works carried out by Rajiv Gandhi when he was the prime minister during 1984-1989, Mr Singhvi said, "The Congress party is proud of Rajiv Gandhi's contribution towards building India. He was the harbinger of Digital India. Telecom Revolution; Computerization of Railways took plays under him. He established peace in the nation by signing numerous Peace Accords- particularly – Assam Accord and the Punjab Accord. He lowered the age of voting to 18, so that more young people exercise their democratic right. He implemented the open sky policy and expanded aviation." Further, giving more details about his achievements, he said, "Under his tenure, India grew at a record GDP growth of 10.2 per cent in the year 1988-89. He took steps to finish License Raj. He strengthened the Panchayati Raj system. India received a special position in the comity of nations under his leadership." The senior Congress leader also attacked the BJP for questioning the Opposition Unity – "The Mahabilawati Jibe" and said, "If the BJP stands at the 'Mahabilawati' argument as espoused by PM Modi, their argument falls flat, because a 30-member NDA, during 2014 became a 42 member alliance in 2019. Will PM Modi not term this as 'mahabilawati'. BJP's alliances are based on Rank Political Opportunism and nothing more."
