Modi’s Sharp Attack on Congress

Agencies, New Delhi Launching a scathing attack on the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday blamed it for partition of India and hit out at it for devoting its energies to protect the ``interests of one family.’’ Replying to the debate on the motion of thanks to the address of the President to both Houses of Parliament, the Prime Minister targeted the Congress for the ills which are still facing the country. ` `The country was partitioned, the seeds of poison was sown. You divided the country for electoral and petty gains...people are suffering even today,” Mr Modi said in his hard-hitting address in the Lok Sabha. Though his 90-minute address in the Lok Sabha was disrupted by slogan-shouting members of the Congress and the Left all along, Mr Modi remained unsparing in sharply attacking the Congress under whose rule the culture of crony-capitalism, nepotism and corruption flourished for a number of years. ` `Your slogans cannot drown my voice,’’ he said. Both UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress President Rahul Gandhi were present in the Lok Sabha. His attack continued in the Rajya Sabha later in the day where he did not face any disruptions. “Don’t lecture us on democracy. It was your party chief who tore up an ordinance and threw it in the faces of the media... It was your party chief who did not let young leaders get their points of view,” he said. In the Rajya Sabha, Mr Modi cited Mahatma Gandhi’s statement that the Congress was no longer needed since India got Independence from the British. He said that “Congress-mukt Bharat” was not his idea, but Gandhi-ji’s idea.
