Muzaffarpur shelter home scandal: Apex court orders CBI to take over probe

New Delhi, The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to take over the probe into the allegations of sexual abuse of inmates at more than 13 shelter homes in Bihar, allegedly unearthed after the Muzaffarpur correctional facility rapes case scandal. Headed by Justice Madan Bhimrao Lokur, the bench transferred the inquiry, being conducted by Bihar police, to the CBI while dismissing the state government's request to not shift the probe. The apex court said the report of Tata Institute of Social Sciences raised grave concern about 17 shelter homes in Bihar and CBI must look into all of them. Agency officers probing the shelter home cases shall not be transferred without its prior permission, the bench ruled. CBI submitted that, in principle, it was ready to take over the probe and by December 7 it expected to file a charge sheet.
