The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Union government to appoint Lokpal at the earliest.
NGO, Common Cause, had filed a plea seeking immediate appointment of the anti-corruption ombudsman that can bring under its scrutiny the high and mighty in the executive of the nation.
The bench, headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, also comprised Justice Ms R Banumathi.
NGO, Common Cause, had filed the petition through its lawyer, Prashant Bhushan seeking immediate appointment of the Lokpal.
"Appoint Lokpal at the earliest in connection with a plea filed by NGO, Common Cause," the division bench ruled. Common Cause had alleged that the Union government was delaying the appointment of Lokpal.
Attorney General K Venugopal, appearing for GOI, told the bench that the Selection Committee had met on April 10 to nominate an eminent jurist.The apex court set May 15 for the next hearing.
